We live in a country in which having seems to be more important than being. We lose track of who we really are in trying to acquire more and more things. Eventually they clutter up our homes and lives. In our society, there is so much emphasis on external image that we can feel like an empty shell. When we look in the mirror, do we like what we see? Do we appreciate ourselves and our own dignity?
Our dignity consists in valuing and respecting who we are, and in this way, growing into who we can become. We always need to get in touch with our inner selves, to discover what is real. In what ways and situations are we acting for or against our truest self? In what ways are we affecting the world around us for the better?
Our Christian faith
tells us that we human beings are made in the image and likeness of God, with immeasurable value and worthy of respect. Each of us is God’s priceless work of art.
As baptised Christians we have received from Jesus this mission: to make our society, and the world we live in, better than they are now, starting with ourselves.
Accordingly, let us seek to make our presence a gift for our neighbourhood and for the wider community.
Gracious God, you love and value the world and everybody in it, including me. Help me to really believe this so that I can act according to my own dignity and make the world a better place for all. Amen
